Where we build: commercial solar by state

Each market has its own incentive stack, utility rules and interconnection path, so we keep a page for every state we serve. Here's what we've completed in each.

Massachusetts — 14 projects · 5.8 MW

Flagship: 85 Wells Avenue, Newton · SMART · Eversource, National Grid, Unitil

Our deepest market. Massachusetts projects run largely as community solar under the SMART program, paying host property owners site-lease income while local subscribers receive bill credits. Highlights: the 1.8 MW hybrid rooftop-and-canopy system at 85 Wells Avenue in Newton, a 701 kW parking canopy for Faith Community Church in Hopkinton, and 537 kW on the Showa Boston Institute in Jamaica Plain.

New Jersey — 11 projects · 3.0 MW

Flagship: ResinTech HQ, Camden · SuSI / SREC-II

New Jersey's SuSI incentive supports PPAs, site leases and customer-owned systems alike. Highlights: ResinTech's 972 kW rooftop-and-canopy headquarters in Camden (customer-owned), a 606 kW rooftop PPA for the Sportika sports complex in Manalapan, 431 kW on ShopRite of Passaic, and 202.5 kW for Princeton Montessori School.

New York — 4 projects · 1.2 MW

Flagship: ShopRite of Elmsford · NY-Sun, Value Stack · Con Edison, Central Hudson

Our home market — Plankton Energy is headquartered in Brooklyn. Highlights: a 641 kW rooftop PPA at ShopRite of Elmsford in Westchester (Con Edison territory), 304 kW of community solar on Staten Island Kitchen Cabinets, and two customer-owned arrays for Vassar College in Poughkeepsie (Central Hudson territory), supported by NY-Sun.

Connecticut — 3 projects · 694 kW

All K-12 schools · ZREC / PPA

Three school rooftops with no upfront cost to the districts: West Elementary School (299 kW) and Saxe Middle School (166 kW) for New Canaan Public Schools, and a 229 kW PPA for a school in Cheshire.

California — 1 project · 485 kW

Flagship: BLVD 63, San Diego · NEM 3.0 · SDG&E

BLVD 63, a Core Spaces student-housing community in San Diego: a 485 kW rooftop system projected to save more than $4 million over its life and avoid 5,900+ metric tons of CO₂.

Tennessee — 1 project · 1.38 MW

Flagship: Tanger Outlets Nashville · largest single rooftop in the portfolio

Tanger Outlets Nashville: a 1,384 kW rooftop system projected to save $5.8 million and avoid 14,860+ metric tons of CO₂ over its life.

Rhode Island — we develop under the REG, REF and C-PACE programs; our New England track record and Rhode Island incentives are on the Rhode Island commercial solar page.

Projects by property type

We build for property types with steady daytime load and large, open, structurally sound roofs or parking — the profile that makes commercial solar pay. Counts are completed projects profiled on this site.

How the projects are structured

Power purchase agreement — 11 projects

We finance, build, own and operate the system; the property buys its output at a fixed rate below the utility's, with no capital outlay.

Examples: ShopRite of Elmsford (641 kW), Sportika (606 kW), Showa Boston Institute (537 kW).

Site lease & community solar — 10 projects, plus 1 hybrid

The property rents us its roof or lot; we develop and operate a community solar array and local subscribers receive bill credits while the owner collects lease income.

Examples: Faith Community Church canopy (701 kW), 360 Waltham Street (540 kW), 42 Hayward Street, Franklin (340 kW).

Customer-owned — 5 projects

The owner buys the system, keeps the federal tax credit and depreciation, and we deliver it turnkey and maintain it.

Examples: ResinTech HQ (972 kW), Vassar College (270 kW and 33 kW), EQR Reserve at Burlington (303 kW).

How every project in the portfolio is delivered

Plankton Energy runs each project in-house, from origination to decades of operation: feasibility and development (site, load profile, interconnection, incentives), engineering and permitting, financing as a PPA, site lease or direct purchase, construction and commissioning, then ownership, monitoring and maintenance for the life of the system. The team that models a project is the team that answers for its performance.

Frequently asked questions about the portfolio

How many commercial solar projects has Plankton Energy completed?

As of August 2026, Plankton Energy has profiled 34 completed commercial solar projects totaling about 12.7 MW DC — from a 28 kW rooftop for Waterford Township EMS in Atco, NJ, to the 1.8 MW rooftop-and-canopy system at 85 Wells Avenue in Newton, MA. The company has installed more than 60,000 commercial solar panels and has 140+ further projects under development.

Where does Plankton Energy build commercial solar?

Completed projects are in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, California and Tennessee. Plankton Energy is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, also develops in Rhode Island, and works with portfolio owners nationwide.

What size are the projects in the portfolio?

Most are between 100 kW and 1 MW DC — the commercial and industrial range — on flat roofs of 10,000+ square feet or parking areas of 25,000+ square feet. Thirty projects are rooftop-only systems and four use parking canopies (three combined with rooftop arrays), including the 701 kW canopy at Faith Community Church in Hopkinton, MA.

Does Plankton Energy own and operate the systems it builds?

Yes. For PPA and site-lease projects Plankton Energy is the long-term owner and operator. For customer-owned systems it delivers the project turnkey and provides operations and maintenance. Every system in the portfolio is monitored and maintained by Plankton Energy.

What types of properties are in the portfolio?

Schools and colleges (8 projects), office buildings (5), retail centers (4), industrial and manufacturing facilities (4), houses of worship (4), multifamily and student housing (3), public-safety buildings (2), and one each of self-storage, sports and recreation, senior living and a community nonprofit.

How are the projects financed?

Through a power purchase agreement (the property buys the output at a fixed rate; 11 projects), a site lease or community solar arrangement (the property earns rent for hosting the array; 10 projects), or direct customer ownership (5 projects). One project, 85 Wells Avenue, combines a rooftop PPA with a community solar canopy.
