Plankton Energy
This 197.46kW rooftop behind the meter solar system sits on a school in Massachusetts. The energy generated is sold to the building through a power purchase agreement at a reduced cost from the local utility.
Plankton Energy developed, financed and built the array and remains its long-term owner and operator. The school made no capital investment: it buys the electricity the roof produces at a fixed rate below the utility’s price, so savings begin with the first bill and stay predictable for the term of the agreement. Plankton monitors production remotely and handles maintenance for the life of the system, which means the facilities team has nothing to manage.
Schools carry steady daytime electricity loads that line up with solar production, and their flat roofs offer large, unobstructed areas for a behind-the-meter system. Because the array offsets consumption on site, the savings show up directly in the operating budget.
