Plankton Energy Completes 33 kW Rooftop Solar Installation at the Vassar College Integrated & Interdisciplinary Building
Poughkeepsie, NY — Plankton Energy has completed a 33-kilowatt (kW) rooftop solar installation on the Integrated & Interdisciplinary (IEI) Building at Vassar College. The system provides clean behind-the-meter generation that directly offsets academic facility electricity use. Supported by the NYSERDA NY-SUN Megawatt Block Rebate Program, the project operates under a customer-owned structure, allowing the college to retain all energy savings and long-term value.
Although smaller in capacity than the AFC installation, the IEI system plays an essential role in expanding renewable integration across Vassar’s campus. The array is expected to produce more than 953,000 kilowatt-hours over its lifetime, resulting in more than 120,000 dollars in avoided electricity costs.
A Purpose-Built System for an Academic Facility
The IEI installation utilizes a flush-mounted rooftop design to preserve the building’s architectural profile while maximizing exposure to sunlight. This approach ensures strong long-term energy production without altering the function or appearance of the structure.
As a behind-the-meter customer-owned system, the IEI installation contributes directly to campus utility cost reduction and supports the college’s broader environmental objectives. For a facility that hosts interdisciplinary academic programs, the project reinforces Vassar’s commitment to sustainability education and operational responsibility.
Expanding Campus Sustainability Through Targeted Solar Deployment
Together with the AFC project, the IEI building installation forms part of Vassar’s multi-facility clean energy plan. By deploying solar across diverse building types, the college strengthens institutional resilience, reduces exposure to fluctuating energy costs, and enhances environmental performance across academic and athletic functions.
The IEI system also contributes to local climate goals and positions Vassar as a model for resource-efficient campus operations.
Enabled by New York’s NY-SUN Incentive Framework
As part of the NYSERDA NY-SUN program, the project benefited from state-supported incentives that reduce upfront costs and expand access to renewable energy. NY-SUN remains one of the most impactful clean-energy programs in the nation, enabling institutions to adopt solar technologies at scale.
Plankton’s Turnkey Institutional Delivery
Plankton Energy managed the full lifecycle of the IEI project, including engineering, structural review, permitting, construction, and interconnection. This integrated delivery strategy ensures quality control, streamlined execution, and long-term system reliability.
“This installation shows how even modest rooftop areas can deliver significant environmental and financial value,” a Plankton spokesperson said. “The IEI Building project reflects Vassar’s continued leadership in integrating sustainability into core campus operations.”
