Plankton Energy is a commercial solar developer, EPC and owner-operator. We design, finance, build, own and operate rooftop and parking-canopy solar systems for commercial property owners, including REITs, private-equity real estate portfolios and owner-operators. Our team handles site assessment, permitting, utility interconnection, construction and long-term monitoring, so the property owner captures the savings without managing the project. See the 34 commercial solar projects we have completed across Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, California and Tennessee.
Two structures put solar on a commercial building without capital from the owner. Under a power purchase agreement (PPA), Plankton Energy develops, finances and owns the system and the property buys the electricity it produces at a fixed rate below the utility’s. Under a site lease, the owner hosts the system, earns lease income, and the power serves community-solar subscribers or the grid. Owners who prefer to keep the tax benefits and all of the savings can also purchase the system outright. Compare the three on our commercial solar financing page.
A commercial solar system lowers electricity costs, protects the property against rising utility rates, and turns unused roof or parking area into an income-producing asset, which improves net operating income and supports property value. It also gives tenants and investors a measurable sustainability credential. Where a project qualifies, federal tax incentives such as the Investment Tax Credit and MACRS depreciation further improve the economics.
