Commercial Solar Financing and stages

How It Works

Plankton Energy develops turnkey commercial solar projects designed around the unique characteristics of each property. Our team manages the entire lifecycle of solar development—from site evaluation and system design to financing, installation, and long-term operations—allowing property owners to unlock the financial and operational benefits of clean energy without navigating the technical complexity of solar deployment.

Each project begins with a comprehensive property evaluation to determine the most effective solar strategy. Plankton analyzes infrastructure, energy usage, available incentives, and financial structures to design a system that maximizes long-term value for commercial property owners, institutions, and businesses.

Plankton Energy offers multiple financing options to align solar projects with property owners’ investment objectives:

  • Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)
  • Site Lease Agreement
  • Direct Purchase

Solar project economics are further strengthened by a range of federal, state, and utility incentive programs:

  • 30% Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
  • Modified Accelerated
  • Cost Recovery System (MACRS)
  • New Jersey’s SuSI program
  • Massachusetts SMART
  • New York’s NY-Sun initiative
  • California’s NEM 3.0

By combining solar development expertise, flexible financing structures, and incentive optimization, Plankton Energy helps commercial property owners transform underutilized infrastructure into long-term energy assets. Property owners can begin by evaluating their site to determine solar potential, available incentives, and the optimal project structure for maximizing financial returns.

Evaluation & Design

We evaluate each property's structure, energy profile, and utility access to determine solar feasibility and financial performance. Our team designs a custom system optimized for incentives, infrastructure, and long-term value.

Engineering, Installation & Commissioning

Plankton manages engineering, permitting, and utility coordination, then oversees construction and system commissioning. Every project is delivered as a turnkey solution built for seamless grid integration and performance.

Operations & Maintenance

We monitor and maintain system performance over time, ensuring reliable energy production and long-term financial returns. Solar becomes a stable, income-generating asset for the property.

Identify Opportunity

Evaluation & Design

Every property has different physical and economic characteristics. Plankton begins by evaluating whether solar development is feasible and how the project could perform financially.

Our development team reviews the building structure, available roof or land area, electrical infrastructure, and utility interconnection options. Local solar policies and incentive programs are also analyzed to determine how the project can maximize available financial benefits.

This initial assessment allows us to determine the optimal system size and the best path forward for the property.

Once the opportunity has been evaluated, Plankton designs a solar system tailored to the property’s energy profile and infrastructure. The design process includes engineering analysis, energy modeling, and financial forecasting.

Our team determines how the system will connect to the building’s electrical infrastructure and how the energy produced will be utilized. Depending on the project, electricity may reduce onsite energy consumption, support a community solar program, or be delivered to the grid.

Develop Project

Engineering, Installation & Commissioning

Solar development requires coordination between engineering teams, utilities, municipalities, and regulatory authorities. Plankton manages the entire development process, including system engineering, interconnection applications, permitting, and equipment procurement.

Utility approvals and interconnection planning are a critical part of this stage, ensuring the system integrates properly with the local grid. By managing the full development process, Plankton ensures that projects move efficiently from concept to construction.

Once development approvals are secured, the project moves into construction. Plankton oversees the installation of the solar system, coordinating contractors, equipment delivery, and quality control throughout the build process.

After installation, the system undergoes testing and commissioning to confirm performance and compliance with utility requirements. Once connected to the grid, the system begins generating clean electricity for the property or surrounding community.

Value Realization

Operations & Maintenance

Solar energy systems are long-term infrastructure assets designed to operate for decades.

Plankton provides ongoing monitoring and maintenance to ensure optimal system performance over the life of the project. Our team manages system diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and operational reporting to maintain reliable energy production.

This long-term partnership ensures the solar system continues delivering economic and environmental value year after year.
